IEEE Team Leadership & Arduino Workshops

As team lead for microcontrollers and microprocessors at McMaster IEEE Computer Society, I am preparing workshops on an industrial object counter and a touchless synthesizer.

My role
Team Lead for Microcontrollers and Microprocessors
Current status
Active leadership
Technology & tools
Microcontrollers · Microprocessors · Arduino · Technical mentoring · Project planning

Context

The problem

Help members make progress on technical work while giving the teams a clear plan. That means being available for questions and coordinating what happens next across projects and people.

How it fits together

Architecture & approach

Leadership and office hours are active responsibilities. Beginner materials and prototypes are developing alongside them; attendance totals, completed certifications, and delivered-workshop outcomes are not claimed.

  3. RespondLEDs + sound
  4. InspectPython telemetry

My contribution

What I worked on

  • Run office hours, help members with technical questions, and support certification work.
  • Coordinate meetings, projects, and deadlines with other executives.
  • Prepare Arduino workshop guides covering components, wiring, code, troubleshooting, and Python telemetry dashboards.

Technical choices

The choices behind the work

Immediate technical help and longer-term project planning need different kinds of attention. Office hours support individual progress; meetings and deadlines give the team a shared direction.

A beginner prototype should be simple to follow without concealing how readings, program logic, and physical outputs connect.

Looking back

Results & current status

Team leadership and office hours are ongoing. Both workshops are in preparation; the guides are available below.

Testing and evidence

The supplied package includes a 13-page illustrated counter guide, a 30-page synthesizer handbook, and two Python monitoring dashboards. Desktop checks can exercise telemetry parsing and sample-data handling; they do not validate the sensor wiring, timing, or audible output. Both workshops are in preparation, with hardware checks and delivery still ahead.

What I learned & what comes next

Useful technical support helps someone understand the next step, while useful team planning makes that next step visible to everyone involved. The role brings those two responsibilities together.

Workshop materials

Two guided 90-minute Arduino workshops for first- and second-year students.

Workshop 01

Industrial Object Counter

An ultrasonic sensor and a two-state controller count each object once. LEDs show the current state, while a Python dashboard displays readings and counts.

  • READY / OCCUPIED state machine
  • Hysteresis + three-reading confirmation
  • Serial telemetry + a rolling count rate

Workshop 02

Touchless Musical Synthesizer

Hand distance controls continuous pitch or an eight-note C-major scale. A Python dashboard displays raw and filtered readings, notes, and frequency.

  • Distance-to-frequency mapping
  • Exponential smoothing + invalid-reading logic
  • Two playing modes + note visualization

Draft guides; code review and hardware checks are ongoing before the workshops run.
